Description

Amitabha Buddha, also known as Amitayus or Amitābha, is a prominent figure in Mahayana Buddhism. According to Buddhist teachings, Amitabha Buddha is one of the five transcendent Buddhas who attained enlightenment and presides over a pure land called Sukhavati (also known as the Pure Land or the Land of Bliss).

Amitabha Buddha is considered to be the principal Buddha of the Pure Land tradition, which emphasizes the practice of devotion and the aspiration to be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land after death. The Pure Land is described as a realm of ultimate happiness and liberation, free from suffering and conducive to the swift attainment of enlightenment.

Amitabha Buddha is revered for his boundless compassion and his vow to help all beings achieve enlightenment. He is often depicted with a serene and peaceful expression, sitting in a meditation posture, and holding a begging bowl or a lotus flower. The name “Amitabha” means “Infinite Light” or “Infinite Splendor,” symbolizing the radiant wisdom and compassion of this enlightened being.

Devotees of Amitabha Buddha engage in various practices, such as chanting his name (“Nianfo” or “Nembutsu” in Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, respectively), reciting sutras, and cultivating a mind of faith and gratitude. By sincerely calling upon Amitabha’s name and aspiring to be reborn in his Pure Land, followers seek to establish a karmic connection with him and ultimately attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
